Unfortunately, people often make frequent grammar mistakes when learning a new language. In fact, if more than 50% of your sentences have any errors in them, you will not get more than band 6 for grammatical range and accuracy. In other words, to score 7 or higher, you should try to make more than half of your sentences completely error-free.<\/p>\n<p>After marking thousands of IELTS tests, I have noticed that the same errors are made repeatedly. Below are the top 10 mistakes and some advice on how to avoid them.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Most people make all or some of these mistakes in their writing and speaking tests. A good thing to do is show some of your practice tests to a teacher or native speaker and establish your common errors. When you know your common grammar errors, you can easily fix them with practice and raise your score.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Use of the word \u2018the\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We use <strong>the<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>when there is only <strong>one<\/strong> of something in a particular area: <em>the government, the police, the bridge, the river, the hospital<\/em><\/li>\n<li>when there is only one in the entire world: <em>the internet, the environment, the ozone layer, the atmosphere<\/em><\/li>\n<li>with ordinal numbers: <em>the first, the second, the third<\/em><\/li>\n<li>with superlatives: <em>the worst, the shortest, the lowest, the most beautiful, the least impressive<\/em><\/li>\n<li>with places where the name refers to a group of islands or states: <em>the USA, the UK, the Maldives, the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates<\/em><\/li>\n<li>before nouns which describe general things: <em>exercise is good for <strong>the body<\/strong>, <strong>the motorbike<\/strong> is the most common form of transport in Asia, the role of <strong>the teacher<\/strong> has changed in recent years<\/em><\/li>\n<li>before abstract nouns used to describe a situation, process, quality or a change: <em>over the years, <strong>the development<\/strong> of the town accelerated, <strong>the frequency <\/strong>of violent crime decreased over the period, <strong>the improvement<\/strong> in living standards <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We don\u2019t use <strong>the<\/strong>: <em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to talk generally, we drop the word \u2018the\u2019 and use the plural: <em>dogs don\u2019t like cats, people with dyslexia have reading problems, Japanese cars are very reliable, and German products are very high quality. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>with a single place or country: Ireland, China, Vietnam, Europe, South America<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Countable and Uncountable Nouns<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some nouns in English are uncountable and will, therefore, always be in the singular form and never plural. Some common nouns that students often get wrong on the IELTS test are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advice<\/li>\n<li>Advertising<\/li>\n<li>Food<\/li>\n<li>Information<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Money<\/li>\n<li>Traffic<\/li>\n<li>Shopping<\/li>\n<li>Entertainment<\/li>\n<li>Happiness<\/li>\n<li>Literature<\/li>\n<li>Work<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a noun is uncountable, you <strong>cannot<\/strong> use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a plural verb: <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">There were many traffic in the city<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>a number: <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">three advice, four food<\/span><\/li>\n<li>a few, a couple, many, a number of: <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">a number of literature, a few research<\/span><\/li>\n<li>a\/an: <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">a happiness, an entertainment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Noun-Verb Agreement <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The verb must agree with the noun. If you use a plural noun, you must use a plural verb and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">There is some dogs outside. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>There <strong>is<\/strong> some <strong>food<\/strong> in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Here are some homework for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There <strong>are<\/strong> some <strong>eggs<\/strong> in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2013ing or to + infinitive <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We use <strong>to + infinitive verb<\/strong> after the following verbs: <em>learn how, would like, want, seem, refuse, promise, prepare, offer, learn, hope, help, deserve, decide, afford, and ask.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p>It is important to <strong>learn how to speak<\/strong> English<\/p>\n<p>Most people cannot <strong>afford to go<\/strong> on holiday every year.<\/p>\n<p>I <strong>would like to study<\/strong> overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Note: \u2018like\u2019 can be followed by \u2013ing <strong>or<\/strong> to + infinitive.<\/p>\n<p>We use <strong>verb\u2013ing<\/strong> after the following verbs: <em>suggest, recommend, practice, mind, keep, involve, imagine, give up, finish, enjoy, deny, consider, carry on, and avoid. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p>I would <strong>recommend checking<\/strong> your writing for mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>You should <strong>avoid drinking<\/strong> coffee after 6 pm.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve <strong>finished writing<\/strong> my essay.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Use Of Articles Before Noun Phrases<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should include a\/an before adjective singular noun combinations: <em>a massive improvement, a steady increase, an overall majority, a very small percentage, a really strong argument. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some exceptions include the word \u2018of\u2019 after the noun phrase: <em>a wide range of, an equal number of, a large\/small number of, a small\/large\/equal proportion of.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Exceptions: <strong><em>quite a<\/em><\/strong><em> few people, <strong>to<\/strong> a certain extent\/degree<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Use of Commas <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the IELTS writing test, we often use phrases called \u2018discourse markers\u2019 or \u2018liking phrases\u2019 to link our ideas together, such as <em>on the one hand, on the other hand, however, for example, nevertheless, firstly, secondly, in\u00a0conclusion, in summary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We normally use a comma after a discourse marker that introduces a sentence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Firstly,<\/em> the main cause of pollution is motor vehicles.<\/li>\n<li><em>On the one hand,<\/em> motor vehicles are said to be the main cause.<\/li>\n<li><em>However,<\/em> pollution from industry may also be to blame.<\/li>\n<li><em>To sum up,<\/em> the causes of pollution are mostly man-made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also use commas on either side of discourse markers in the middle of sentences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fossil fuels are mostly to blame for global warming; however, some people believe this is a natural process.<\/li>\n<li>Fossil fuels are mostly to blame for global warming, for example, from cars and factories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Verb Tenses<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Always consider which of the following tense you should use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Present simple:\n<ul>\n<li>things that are always true (the sky is blue)<\/li>\n<li>general statements of fact (I was born in 1982)<\/li>\n<li>habits (I go to sleep every night at 11 pm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Present continuous:\n<ul>\n<li>an action at the moment of speaking<\/li>\n<li>something in progress this week, month or year<\/li>\n<li>to talk about a future planned event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Present Perfect:\n<ul>\n<li>an action that took place at an indefinite time in the past<\/li>\n<li>an action that was repeated before now<\/li>\n<li>an action that began in the past and continues until now<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Present Perfect Continuous:\n<ul>\n<li>to show the duration of something that happened in the past and continues until now<\/li>\n<li>a general activity in progress recently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Past Simple\n<ul>\n<li>an action that began in the past and finished in the past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Past Continuous\n<ul>\n<li>talk about an action that was happening in the past when another occurred<\/li>\n<li>an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Past Perfect\n<ul>\n<li>talk about something that was completed before another activity or another time in the past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Past Perfect Continuous\n<ul>\n<li>talk about duration of activity that was in progress before another event in the past<\/li>\n<li>an activity in progress that is recent to another time or activity in the past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Future Simple\n<ul>\n<li>to predict or plan for the future<\/li>\n<li>to express a willingness to do something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Future Continuous\n<ul>\n<li>an action that will be in progress at a time in the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Future Perfect\n<ul>\n<li>an action that will be completed before another time or event in the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Future Perfect Continuous\n<ul>\n<li>the duration of an action that will be in progress before another time or event in the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prepositions After Adjectives and Nouns <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Students often get confused about which prepositions to use after adjectives and nouns.
