However, some things are exactly the same. Let&#8217;s look at the similarities first.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at the similarities first.<\/p>\n<h2>IELTS General Writing vs Academic: Similarities<\/h2>\n<p>For both, you have to do Task 1 and Task 2 in one hour.<\/p>\n<p>Task 2 is the same for both. The examiners will be judging you on the exact same <a href=\"https:\/\/takeielts.britishcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/ielts_task_1_writing_band_descriptors.pdf\">marking criteria<\/a> and the type of questions you get\u00a0will be the same.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it doesn&#8217;t matter what test you are doing. If you see &#8216;Task 2&#8217; then it is applicable to you.<\/p>\n<p>For all the free help you will need for Task 2, please check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieltsadvantage.com\/writing-task-2\/\">Task 2 page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>IELTS General Writing vs Academic: Differences<\/h2>\n<p>The major difference is Task 1. For General Training Writing, you will always be asked to write a letter.<\/p>\n<p>For Academic Writing, you will never be asked to write a letter. If you are doing Academic, please check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieltsadvantage.com\/writing-task-1\/\">Task 1 Academic resources<\/a> because the following does not apply to you.<\/p>\n<h2>IELTS General Writing: Task 1<\/h2>\n<p>There are two possible letters they will ask you to write:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A formal letter<\/li>\n<li>An informal letter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are lots of teachers and websites that talk about &#8216;semi-formal&#8217; letters. You do not have to worry about these. Do not over-complicate things by studying a third type of letter, formal and informal are all you need.<\/p>\n<h2>IELTS General Writing: Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>The General Training Task 1 test always follows the same format. You will be given the scenario and then asked to write about three bullet points.<\/p>\n<p>This is a typical General Training Task 1 format:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a letter to [X]. You should include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bullet point 1\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bullet point 2\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bullet point 3<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example<strong>:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You live in a room in college which you share with another student. However, there are many problems with this arrangement and you find it\u00a0<\/strong><strong>very difficult to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In the letter,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 describe the situation<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 explain your problems and why it is difficult to work<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 say what kind of accommodation you would prefer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This predictable\u00a0format allows us to follow a strategy that ensures we cover all of the various points and that we answer the question.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy is as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dear [X]\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph 1- State purpose of the letter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph 2- First bullet point\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph 3- Second bullet point\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paragraph 4- Third bullet point\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sign off\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Your name\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You should aim to write around 50 words for each of the bullet points to ensure you develop your main ideas sufficiently. Be careful to stick to the main points and do not write about unnecessary details.<\/p>\n<p>You can use this strategy for any IELTS General Writing question. However, you do need to be aware of the tone you need to use.<\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieltsadvantage.com\/2015\/08\/20\/general-training-task-1-strategy\/\">this link <\/a>for more info. on this strategy.<\/p>\n<h2>IELTS General Writing: Formal or Informal?<\/h2>\n<p>There is a very simple way to tell if you are supposed to write a formal or informal letter- the word &#8216;friend&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>If they ask you to write to a &#8216;friend&#8217;, it is always an informal letter.<\/p>\n<p>If the question asks you to write to anyone else, it is a formal letter.<\/p>\n<p>This is the simplest thing you will ever have to do on your IELTS test, just look for the word &#8216;friend&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Despite making it simple for you, every time I give this advice people always ask &#8216;What if&#8230;.&#8217; questions. You are probably thinking of one right now. Stop!
