IELTS Writing Task 2 – Advantages & Disadvantages Essay

This type of question asks you to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of something or it will possibly ask if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation.

Why this is the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not well-managed.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world? Do you think that the benefits of tourism outweigh its drawbacks?

Many people work long hours, leaving very little time for leisure activities.

Does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?

The question may ask for ‘advantages’ plural, but it is ok to write about one advantage or disadvantage as long as the subject is fully explained and developed.

You may choose to write about 2 advantages and disadvantages but be careful not to make the essay too long. It will allow you to use more English in a longer essay but make more grammar and spelling mistakes in longer essays.

Advantages and disadvantages of the structure

Introduction

  • Paraphrase the question
  • Outline the main idea/main view of the statement
  • State the other view or your opinion (if needed)

Main Body 1

  • Topic statement – State Advantage
  • Explain the reason for this advantage
  • Give an example to illustrate the idea

Main Body 2

  • Topic statement – State disadvantage
  • Explain the reason for the disadvantage
  • Give an example

Conclusion

  • Summarise the main points
  • give your own opinion if needed
